= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As what is arguably one of the most well-known business publications in the world, the Harvard Business Review is a key source of information for policy makers, financiers, government officials, and journalists. While not all of their content is available for free here, their website offers enough free material to make it a valuable online destination. First-time visitors can browse their Must Reads, which are prominently featured on the homepage. These offerings are divided into areas that include Leadership, Strategy, Managing Yourself, and Change Management. Moving along, visitors should also look over the Blogs area containing excellent posts with titles like "Should Barnes & Noble Turn into a Mini-Mall" and "Disengaged Employees? Do Something About it." There is more free content over at the Audio & Video area where visitors can view high-quality videos on urban sustainability, emerging markets, and the booming business of craft cocktails. Visit this site.

9. Education: Railroads and the Making of Modern America
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In the 19th century, the widespread expansion of railroads across the American landscape transformed the lives of millions of people from Maine to California. This digital collection from the University of Nebraska seeks "to document and represent the rapid and far-reaching social effects of railroads and to explore the transformation of the United States to modern ideas, institutions, and practices in the nineteenth century." The site is a tremendous trove of maps, letters, ephemera that help to tell this story in fine detail. On the homepage, visitors can look over sections that include Topics, Views, Data, and Teaching Materials. In the Topics area, visitors can look over thematic collections like Slavery and Southern Railroads and Railroad Work and Workers. The Data area is a real gem, as it features historical railroad systems' GIS files from the 1860s and 1870s, and data visualizations such as some rather elaborate representations of data from historical volumes on railroads. Finally, the Teaching Materials area includes interviews with teachers, an educators' blog, and ideas for teaching with the site. Visit this site.

National Railway Museum in York, England, gathers five surviving sister locomotives for 'once-in-a-lifetime' event. On 3 July 1938, A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record. That record still stands. In 2013, we're marking the 75th anniversary of Mallard's achievement with a series of commemorative events, including three spectacular opportunities to see the record breaker united with its five surviving sister locomotives: a family reunion on an international scale. Underway right now is our first ‘Great Gathering', which is a free, non-ticketed event.  Visit this site.

11. Education & Environment: Africa's Endangered Elephants

Militant groups in Central and East Africa are cashing in on the lucrative ivory trade to fund their operations across the continent, threatening both regional security and the survival of Africa's endangered elephants. Demand from increasingly affluent China and Southeast Asian nations has driven a surge in elephant poaching in recent years, leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of the animals annually, wildlife monitoring groups say.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

12. Education: Understanding Human Anatomy & Physiology

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Get Body Smart site was created in 2000 by Scott Sheffield. He's been teaching human anatomy and physiology for over 20 years and the site is an important source of high-quality information on both fields. As it is an online textbook, the subject areas here on the homepage include Skeletal System, Nervous System, and Histology. Each of these areas includes an introductory tutorial, along with short quizzes designed to test the visitors on each topic. The site also includes a specific area dedicated just to quizzes, and it's quite useful for teachers seeking a way to keep students up-to-date. The site is rounded out by a social media section, along with a short selection of Related Links.  Visit this site.

Initial Public Offerings ~ by Arid Khurshed

An initial public offering (IPO) - the occasion when a firm’s shares are issued to the public for the first time - is one of the most exciting events in the life of a company, providing new opportunities for the business, its managers and for investors. IPOs thus attract a lot of attention from stock market researchers, academics and investors seeking to understand more about how they work and how the shares of IPO companies perform once they are listed.
