Many countries that face unemployment challenges do not have the natural resources that South Africa has, International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said on Saturday. Once the world’s largest carpet mill, Dean Clough in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, is now home to more than 100 business, arts and educational organisations employing around 4,000 people – comparable to the workforce of its industrial heyday. It is also one of the North’s most significant art centres with six galleries and over 20 resident artists who are given studio space free of charge.  To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link.

12. Education: History of Cultural & Academic Films
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Internet Archive bills itself as "universal access to all knowledge," and lives up to this promise by hosting dozens of thematic collections. This collection, covering Cultural & Academic Films, includes materials from the Academic Film Archive and the Media Burn Independent Film Archive, as well as documentaries by noted filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman. Also, the collection includes works from the University Of Pennsylvania Museum Of Archaeology by Watson Kintner, who used film to document his travels around the globe. One amazing highlight here is the Buckminster Fuller Archive, a sub-collection within this larger group. It features 42 hours of lectures delivered by this futurist, architect, and thinker, delivered during the last two weeks of January, 1975. The other sub-collections here include the Chicago Film Archives, California Light and Sound, and the Global Lives Project. Visit this site.

Editor’s Note
:  We always check and screen all material that is sent to our News Desk, plus we check all the items that our volunteer researches forward for our approval for public release.  This is one source of archive material that is truly incredible and is highly recommended by our Senior Editor and is a "must read" to all our readers viewing and watching the video archives.

When the wooden hull of the Mary Rose was raised from the seabed off Portsmouth in October 1982, Britain watched, entranced. As Prince Charles looked on from a bobbing boat and families across the country sat glued to their TVs, a giant yellow cradle emerged from the depths, carrying its precious cargo — a Tudor warship.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 14. Education & Entertainment: Music of Wagner
= = = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Richard Wagner's music has been featured prominently in everything from well-received stagings in Tokyo to Warner Brothers cartoons starring Bugs Bunny. His music has endured over 150 years and this website presents material related to the bicentenary of his birth in 1813. The site contains six sections, including About, Events, News, and 200 Years of Wagner. The 200 Years of Wagner is a timeline of Wagner's life and legacy, which is a great way for visitors to learn about the cultural and social milieu of his time. The Events area provides details on events designed to complement this occasion, including concerts at London area venues, including the Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall, and the Royal Opera House. The site also includes a Links area and a News section which includes reviews of performances and recitals. Visit this site.

The moorland that inspired Wuthering Heights has remained untouched by time since the Brontë sisters visited its wild beauty in search of inspiration. But now the glorious carpet of heather is in danger of being usurped by invading flora planted by mourners who have scattered the ashes of loved ones on the moors.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

One of our regular readers sent this report about her visit to the Giraffe Lodge in Kenya. “This is by far my favourite place to stay in Nairobi. While the Norfolk is certainly a nice colonial place in the centre of Nairobi, this manor gives you the unique opportunity to witness giraffes up-close. I know this sounds very tacky, but it is actually an amazing experience which will touch your soul.”  To read more about this incredible place, click here. 18. Travel: Tasmania Here We Come!

= = = = = = = = = = = =

Lonely Planet named Tasmania's Bay of Fires area the world's hottest travel destination. The travel guide waxed lyrical about the area on the state's northeast coast, describing it as "white beaches of hourglass-fine sand, Bombay Sapphire sea, an azure sky - and nobody".  To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link.

19. Travel & Education: Views of the American National Parks
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = =

There is no true substitute for visiting one of America's great national parks, but this website, designed "to present the natural, cultural, and historical resources of our national parks," is a nice surrogate for an in-person jaunt. On the homepage, visitors can select a park or theme from several dozen headings, including National Mall, Whiskeytown, Glaciers, and Devils Tower. Within each area, visitors can examine a series of high-quality images, along with four or five sections that address different aspects of each topic or specific park. Perhaps the most useful elements of the site are the very fine resources for teachers. Clicking on the Teachers' Lounge area will bring up a number of high-quality educational articles, lesson plans, and educational standards guidelines. All told, there are 14 different lesson plans here, which are complemented by links to external resources and additional readings.  Visit this site.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

It is hard to beat Kenya for its unfettered access to wildlife, but visitors often forget that getting up close does not have to mean being confined in a vehicle. For example, while much of your day at the Ark may be spent roaming Aberdare National Park in 4x4 jeeps seeking out playful monkeys, elusive lions and the occasional waterfall, at the lodge you are still sleeping within the animals’ hunting grounds.  Visit this site.
