As Madagascar moves to recover after a five-year political crisis triggered by a 2009 coup, President Hery Rajaonarimampianina, who took office in January 2014 following peaceful December elections, on Friday encouraged South African businesses to invest in the country. Since the restoration of “political normality”, Madagascar was poised for socioeconomic growth and development and was working towards developing a “business-conducive” environment to stimulate foreign direct investment (FDI). Taoiseach Enda Kenny this evening remembered those who died “slow starving deaths in the fields around here” as he led the National Famine Commemoration at Strokestown House, Co Roscommon, Ireland. Mr Kenny unveiled a memorial wall bearing the names of the 1,490 people from the Stokestown estate who left Ireland for Canada on the coffin ships commissioned by local landlord Denis Mahon in 1847. This collection brings together thousands of images from the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University that tell the story of the colonial Americas. The images date from around 1492 to the 1820s and visitors can browse the collection by category, which include What, Where, Who, and When. The What section has some subcategories that range from the tragic (Accidental Deaths) to those that are more transit-oriented (Stagecoaches). The images here are suitable for use in the classroom and visitors who teach American history, geography, and a range of other subjects will find the materials most useful for providing visual armature to any lecture or discussion. People are always asking me what my favorite books are. I’ve held off listing them because it seems self-indulgent. But, with summer almost here, I thought I might spend a couple of columns recommending eight books that have been pivotal in my life. To read this inspiring report, go to our NEWS DESK link

When a 500-year-old skeleton was found beneath a Leicester car park in 2012 no-one could have predicted that it would lead to a ‘battle royal’ involving the likes of actors Steve Coogan and Mark Gatiss, not to mention historians, MPs and thousands of petitioners. The discovery of the remains of Richard III inflamed regional passions in Yorkshire and Leicestershire of the kind that helped tear apart medieval England. 6. Immigration: Using the Investment Visa to Obtain US Citizenship
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As opportunities for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the US continue to pop up, wealthy Chinese individuals are champing at the bit for a chance to get a piece of the pie and an increasingly popular phenomenon is the use of the EB-5 immigrant investor program. Michael J. Wildes, a managing partner at New York-based immigration law firm Wildes & Weinberg PC, said he expects the EB-5 program to continue in its widespread application. EB-5 is an alternative way for immigrant investors to obtain a visa. It was created in 1990 by Congress to help stimulate the economy through job creation and foreign investment. With a minimum of $1 million — or $500,000 in low employment or rural areas — an EB-5 investor must create at least 10 full-time jobs through the project they are working toward completing. In return, the investor is eligible for permanent US residency. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

A task force convened by the Obama administration issued the most detailed study yet of blight in Detroit on Tuesday and recommended that the city spend at least $850 million to quickly tear down about 40,000 dilapidated buildings, demolish or restore tens of thousands more, and clear thousands of trash-packed lots. Kenya's Rift Valley, famous for its wildlife parks, herds of wildebeest and pink flamingos, has been experiencing devastating flooding.  Almost all of the area's lakes have been rising for the past three years, damaging houses, schools and national parks. The airline inflight amenity kit has been a staple of business travel since the 1930’s and 1940’s when transoceanic air travel became relatively common. This website brought back memories of when these travel kits were common and somewhat useful.  To take a look back in history, visit this site.

Editor’s Note:  International travel has improved somewhat since the 1930’s, please visit our webpage on travel.

Our senior partner always travelled business class on KLM on his visits between USA, England, Kenya and South Africa, and on every trip he received a beautiful porcelain model of a typical Dutch house in Amsterdam, made by Blue Delft, (also by the way, filled with gin).  We have these Delft models lined up in the corporate offices of the Delamere Group in Long Beach, California. TMT Predictions' objective is to identify critical inflection points we believe should inform industry strategic thinking, and to explain how we think these will manifest over the next 12-18 months for companies in Technology, Media, Telecommunications (TMT), and other industries. “We are likely to see students embrace OOCs that allow them to learn what they want, when they want,” the Deloitte TMT Predictions 2014 report noted, pointing out that the percentage of students over the age of 25 was increasing faster than the percentage of students under the age of 25, as life-long learning becomes a requirement for continued employment.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Sometimes land and sky are both busy and beautiful. The landscape pictured in the foreground encompasses Bryce Canyon in Utah, USA, famous for its many interesting rock structures eroded over millions of years. The skyscape above, photogenic in its own right, encompasses the arching central disk of our Milky Way Galaxy, streaks that include three passing airplanes.  Visit this site.
