China has offered Zimbabwe $3-billion for vast platinum reserves, a local private newspaper reported on Friday but said the deal was likely to be rejected by the government over its terms. Zimbabwe, with an estimated $6-billion yearly economy, has the world's second largest platinum reserves after South Africa. It has relied heavily on Chinese investment to prop up a staggering economy. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Mining News)

2. Business: Corruption in Afghanistan
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A group of well-connected Afghan businessmen and politicians may have plundered as much as $900m from the country's biggest bank, three times the amount of earlier estimates, and the equivalent of about 7 per cent of Afghanistan's total gross domestic product. Don't forget that these funds came directly from the American tax payers? To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

4. Business: Investing in Uganda
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

On 18 February, the polls opened in Uganda a country now known to be floating on so much oil that it could slide down a slipway, across Kenya, and into the Indian Ocean. Up for grabs is the presidency, all parliamentary and local seats; in short, everything. And that oil. After being left to its own devices for two similar elections in the past decade, the former protectorate has again come under the gaze of Britain's fickle eye. South Africa's President Jacob Zuma will sign a one-billion-euro deal with the French Development Agency during a state visit to France next month that could also touch on a pricey nuclear project, a minister said on Thursday. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link (Engineering News)

7. Business: Plans for a New Nation 'South Sudan'
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Sudan will consider setting up new oil pipelines if it finds fresh reserves of crude after independence, an official said on Wednesday, suggesting a move that could antagonise Khartoum. South Sudan is due to secede from the north in July after its voters overwhelmingly chose to declare independence in a referendum last month. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

8. Business: Trouble Ahead for South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Fifty-one percent of South Africans between 15 and 24 are unemployed, an SA Institute of Race Relations survey has found. This was more than double the national unemployment rate of 25 percent. Our reporter in Johannesburg informs us that this massive swell of unemployed youth will only spell disaster, as idleness creates crime. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Education: Historical Maps Collection
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

With over 21,000 maps online, the David Rumsey Historical Maps Collection is so vast that it can be hard to keep tabs on all the great new maps that make it to the site. Thus, the Featured Maps area is quite a welcome find for cartographers, geographers, and the just plain curious. Visitors can view all of the recent additions here, which have included collections of map cartouches (or decorative map titles), 19th century maps by children, and maps from the National Survey of France. After a quick look around, visitors can also add their own comments, and sign up for their RSS feed. The site also contains links to special video features, news updates, and a clutch of related map sites. Visit this site.

10. Education: Rijksmuseum Museum Amsterdam
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Rijksmuseum Museum is in Amsterdam and their elegant website has many multimedia features of note. Visitors should definitely start by going to "The Masterpieces of the Rijksmuseum" link. Once there, visitors can view the Masterpieces of the Golden Age in several different ways, such as on a "Timeline", via a 3D interactive panorama of the Philips Wing (QuickTime is required) or through an online presentation.

The online presentation offers visitors a "Golden Age Quiz", zoomable artworks in the "Look Closer" tab, and an audio tour of an exquisite 17th century "Dollhouse" commissioned by the wife of a wealthy silk merchant. The "Restoration" link in the "Collection" tab provides those visitors interested in the process of restoring and conserving with a look at six artworks that are to be ready for the 2013 opening of the new Rijksmuseum. The works include a Vermeer, two portraits by Mattheus Verheyden, and a silver table ornament from 1549 by Jamnitzer. Visitors who are visually impaired can also listen to any of the web pages read by a digitized voice. Visit this site.

12. Immigration: Easier Entry into South Africa for Foreigners
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South African Government Department of Home Affairs wants it to be easier for foreigners to work, study and travel in South Africa, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Friday. The minister told a media briefing in Cape Town she hoped to cut red tape in the country's permit regime, while at the same time stepping up controls designed to keep criminals out of the country. The Delamere Group has been campaigning for this positive move for some years, so we hope it comes to realization. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Engineering News)

The number of foreigners settling in the UK rose by more than a fifth last year, figures show. A total of 237,890 people were granted settlement in the UK in 2010, a rise of 22% compared with 194,780 in the previous year. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

14. Real Estate: Renting Better than Buying a House?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The share of Americans who own their home dropped again last year, but that decline is not being driven by foreclosures pushing people out of the real-estate market. Instead, more people appear to be rejecting the idea of a home as an investment. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The Titanic might have grabbed headlines as the world's most glamorous luxury liner, immortalized on the Silver Screen by Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet's love story in the Oscar-winning 1997 eponymous film, but there was another ship that was almost twice the weight, which did not sink, and she is still afloat, as a hotel. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Also visit Culver City while you are in the area. It might not have the household name recognition of Hollywood (or even Burbank), but Culver City - a five square mile slip just south of the 10 freeway and east of Venice Beach - has been one of LA's major neighbourhoods for TV and film production for nearly 100 years, with everything from Citizen Kane to Arrested Development being filmed within its borders. The city was also the home of the famous pair Laurel and Hardy.

Editor's Note: Some of the senior staff of the Delamere Group are based in Long Beach, and this floating hotel "Queen Mary" has become a favorite dining place, especially in the Sir Winston Churchill Restaurant. Visit this site.
