Exchanges from Brazil, Russia, India, Hong Kong and South Africa -- representing the BRICS grouping of big emerging markets -- said on Wednesday they plan to list contracts based on their flagship equity indexes by June 2012. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Sharenet)

8. Education: Royal Museum for Central Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Founded in 1898, and located in Belgium, this museum is dedicated to Africa and "plays an active role in the sustainable development of Africa and aspires to be a centre for collaboration and reflection on today's Africa and the challenges it faces." The Natural Sciences Collection of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) is available only in English and is meant to be used as primary material for researchers.

The collection is divided up between "Biology" and "Earth Sciences". Visitors will find the "African Geographic Pictures" under the Earth Sciences link to be interesting, as they provide the ability to search the collection or browse by feature or country. It should be noted that the stated master themes of all of the images are "sustainability in agriculture and forestry", "hazardous geomorphic events" and physical and human geography.

If in the "African Geographic Pictures" section, visitors search by country and choose Ethiopia, for instance, 598 images will come up, and about one fifth of them are agriculture-related. One particularly compelling photo of the verdant Abyssinian highlands at the end of the farming season shows farm buildings of stone that would look like ancient ruins, were they in disrepair. 10. Education: Future of Education in Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Governments are struggling to meet the rising demand for secondary education, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are enough school places for just 36% of children of age to enroll, according the latest edition of the Global Education Digest. Globally, secondary schools have been accommodating almost one hundred million more students each decade, with the total number growing by 60% between 1990 and 2009. But the supply is dwarfed by demand as more countries approach universal primary education. To read (or download the full report) from UNESCO, go to our NEWS DESK link.

11. Education: Human Rights Abuses
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Human rights abuses documented by the written word are powerful, but videos of human rights abuses can be even more transforming. WITNESS was co- founded in 1992 with the commitment of singer and activist Peter Gabriel. Their website states that it "partners with human rights organizations to bring the power of video into their existing campaigns and advance human rights causes around the world." Visitors interested in how video is used to further human rights causes should definitely check out the "Case Studies" link under the "Campaigns" tab. The case studies include "Internally Displaced People in Burma" and "Educational Rights for Romani Children in Bulgaria" which give background on the problem covered in each film, along with the actual video. The "Training" tab is helpful for those visitors who want to engage in video advocacy for their own organization. Also, a "Video Advocacy Planning Toolkit" link is also provided under the Training tab. Visit this site.
