The African Development Bank (AfDB) on Wednesday approved a $7.5-million grant to finance the Tripartite Capacity Building Programme (TCBP), which will strengthen the collaboration between the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community, known as the Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA). The programme would provide technical assistance to the three regional economic communities and the 26 TFTA regional member countries with a view to increase intra-TFTA trade. 2. Business: How About Investing in Russia (Member of BRICS)
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The billionaire capital of the world, Moscow, Europe’s largest city, wants to establish itself as a financial hub, despite loud calls that Russia is a ‘bad investment'. Much attention is paid to Moscow’s billionaires as financial circles watch with intrigue as football clubs, Greek islands, and New York penthouses are bought up by Russia’s new class of wealth.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note:  A number of our readers have requested more information about the prospects of good investment returns if they invest in the Russian economy, especially being a member of BRICS. Visit our web page on Russia. Also our editorial staff reads the daily newspaper RussiaNews.net, which is a great source for the latest information on current affairs and business in Russia.

Ethiopia has signed a preliminary agreement with a US-Icelandic firm for a $4-billion private sector investment intended to tap its vast geothermal power resources and help it become a major exporter of energy for East Africa. Reykjavik Geothermal, whose Icelandic geothermal expertise is backed by US investors, signed a deal with Ethiopia on Wednesday to construct a 1 000 MW geothermal power plant, Africa's largest, in the volcanically active Rift Valley. 4. Business: London is Booming Again
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = =

Years ago the aristocrats were looking for somewhere fashionable to spend the season away from their remote estates throughout England. Now it’s Chinese, Russian and Arab billionaires who are seeking a place close to Sloane Street’s boutiques and far from the political uncertainty back home.  To read the full report of the fascinating change going on in London, go to our NEWS DESK link.

6. Education & News: Native American Times

= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Native American Times makes good on its promise to deliver "today's independent Indian news." The site has a clean design that includes ten sections covering topics like business, culture, education, sports, and powwows. The News area offers a nice digest of what's going on in several areas of interest to Native Americans, with topical headlines that include "Cherokee Art Market Announces Winners" and "Yakama Maintain Wild Horse Race Tradition." The site also includes a great jobs area for folks who might be looking for Native American-focused work in public policy, community development, technology, and other fields. Visit this site.

Editor’s Note:  We have been requested to include this item in our Newsletter as we have many readers, both students and historians that have requested more information about the history of the Native American.  Contact us if you require additional assistance.  An additional site worth viewing is this one related to “First Nations Tribal Collection of the Southern Oregon Digital Archives” that contains an incredible amount of information in the form of books, articles, and documents related to the history of the native peoples of the area.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Have you ever tried to explain apartheid to a young child? Trying to simplify that wretched system for a growing mind tends to bring all its absurdity and stupidity to the surface. For someone who doesn’t quite get it, apartheid can sound too fanciful to have ever happened. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (bdlive)

8. Education: Canadian Pacific Railway

= = = = = = = = = = = =

The Canadian Pacific Railway collection provides access to over 1500 images documenting the company's activities all around British Columbia from the 1880s to the 1950s. The pictures portray railway stations both urban and rural, along with images of workers, buildings, hotels, ships, and yards that were part of the railroad's vast empire. Visitors can click on the Collection area to get started and the search function is another good way to focus in on items of interest. Within the History tab is an elegant and well-developed essay on the company, complete with illustrative images while the Photographers section provides great insight into who exactly took these pictures. And, of course, casual users may just wish to click on the Gallery to get a sampling of the works that make up this archive. Visit this site.

African elephants have demonstrated what appears to be an instinctive understanding of human gestures, according to UK scientists. In a series of tests, researcher Ann Smet, of the University of St Andrews, offered the animals a choice between two identical buckets, then pointed at the one containing a hidden treat. Energy generation has never been without controversy, and green energy is proving to be no different. The environmental arguments against coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear power are well rehearsed. More recently, the wind power industry has been unable to silence critics of wind turbines’ impact on birds and bats. In March, the Wildlife Society Bulletin reported that about 888,000 bats and 573,000 birds are killed by wind farms annually, 80,000 of which are raptors such as hawks, falcons and eagles. John Wayne was the archetypal screen cowboy, embodying the rough independence of the American west for generations of film fans. Now, newly discovered still photographs offer fresh insight into a western he made that was last seen more than three-quarters of a century ago.  To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link. Editor’s Note: There is no hiding the fact that the editorial staff of the Delamere Group are great fans of John Wayne and the Film History Museum.

Erich Priebke was born in the small German town of Hennigsdorf, north of Berlin, in 1913 and joined the Gestapo in 1936. During World War II he served as an SS captain and was sent to Rome in 1941. Three years later, he was involved in what came to be described as one of Italy's worst wartime atrocities. On 24 March 1944, 335 Italian citizens - 75 of them Jewish - were rounded up and taken to the Ardeatine Caves just outside Rome. There they were murdered.  To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

In 2000, the city of Seattle began an ambitious project to survey and inventory historic resources across the entire municipality. The last such project took place in 1979 and taken together, these efforts offer excellent documentation of the built environment. The database here includes over 5,000 properties and visitors can search through the entire collection by address, parcel number, property attribute (such as date of construction), and a number of other fields. The Context Statements area is a great way to learn about the methodologies and basic findings utilized to cover each neighborhood. Historic preservation specialists will find that the statements are extremely detailed in terms of resources used to create such a narrative profile. The site also includes a Glossary of Terms that covers "acquisition type" to "year of construction."  Visit this site.

Whether you sleep in an airport overnight by choice or you just get stuck in the airport due to a layover, let “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” help make your travel experience more tolerable.”  Visit this site.
