"Shelter" and the "Homelessness Act of 2002"

After 8 long years of campaigning, this new legislation related to providing for the homeless in the UK finally was given Royal Assent. Working with "Shelter", a national campaigning charity, which handles over 100,000 homeless or badly housed people every year, is an act of kindness by many local volunteers. Read the history and objectives of "Shelter" and the "Homelessness Act of 2002," and to find out ways you can assist on a local basis in this critical problem of adequate housing, visit their website.

Editor’s Note: In addition, one of our readers submitted this article sponsored by “Shelter” which shows some dramatic and very disturbing photos of the plight of many British people in the 1960s and the dreadful conditions in which they were forced to live, click here. Economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa will be robust, although energy supply constraints, strikes, and weak global and domestic demand will limit SA’s growth. This is according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) African department director Antoinette Sayeh during the release of the October 2014 regional economic outlook report for sub-Saharan Africa on Monday. The IMF forecast that the region’s economy would grow by 5.1% this year and 5.8% next year, while SA was seen growing at 1.4% this year and 2.3% next year. Minister in the Presidency in South Africa, Jeff Radebe says the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics) collaboration has become one of the most recognised groupings in the global economy, constituting in excess of a quarter of global gross domestic product, accounting for 43% of the world’s population and holding 40% of global currency reserves, estimated at around $4.4-trillion. He told the InnovaBrics Forum, in London, on Monday, that the platform would promote closer cooperation between member countries to support growth, development and poverty reduction objectives, building on each State’s respective economic strengths. David Cameron has asked the Emir of Qatar to put billions of pounds into creating a Northern Powerhouse and east west High Speed Rail. The Prime Minister met with the Emir to look at how Qatar, which has ploughed some £20bn into the UK in recent years, could become an even bigger investor in the UK’s list of much-needed infrastructure projects. 6. Business: Collapse of the Government of Burkina Faso in Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The government of Burkina Faso collapsed on Thursday as demonstrators protesting the president’s plans to stay in office after 27 years surged through the streets of Ouagadougou, the capital, overrunning state broadcasters, setting fire to the Parliament building and torching the homes of the president’s relatives. After several hours of increasingly violent protests, a government spokesman announced that a bill to extend the term of President Blaise Compaoré had been dropped, or at least delayed. But the protests continued, and later in the day, Mr. Compaoré announced that the government had been dissolved and promised more talks with the opposition “to end the crisis,” according to a statement read on a local radio station. The official Gershwin Music site provides some wonderful Gershwin memorabilia in a snappy, entertaining package. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants in 1890’s Brooklyn, Ira and George Gershwin (nee Israel and Jacob Gershovitz) lived the quintessential American Dream, moving from poverty to riches and obscurity to renown. The homepage opens with a classic, rotating Gershwin tune and clicking on Menu will take you to the options bar. From there, navigate to Two Brothers Make History and Time Line for the Gershwin’s story to read all about Ira and George. Shows, Films, and Songs highlights the full spectrum of the brothers’ work together, complete with songs playable straight from the site. Eight issues of Words Without Music: The Ira Gershwin Newsletter are also available within the Resources section. This compilation is a real treat for those with an interest in music and theater. 9. Education & Environment: Human Development Reports
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

This fascinating interactive map from the United Nations Development Program provides Human Development Reports on over 200 countries around the world. Fancy a factoid? While the United States scores number five in its ability to promote human development, with a mean income of $50,000 a year and a murder rate of less than 5 out of every 100,000 people, the prison population stands at a whopping 716 per 100,000. Compare that to Canada’s homicide rate of 1.54 and incarceration rate of 118. Other interesting tidbits gleaned from this site reveal the mean years of schooling in Kazakhstan (10.37 years) and the life expectancy in Madagascar (64 years-old). There is a lot of great educational material here, including the HDialogue section that features timely articles on issues related to human development, such as “Trans-border Vulnerabilities” and “The case for investing in early childhood.” Visit this site.

Every field needs an advocate and in a field changing as rapidly - and as irrevocably - as library science, it pays to have an advocate that is strong, clear, and forward thinking. The Advocacy page of the American Library Association contains all these qualities and more. Viewers can engage with a host of articles, webinars, and Q&As with library science experts. Highlights include "A 21st Century Approach to School Librarian Evaluation," a webinar with nationally recognized librarian Patricia Owen, and the webinar "Literacy Innovations," with ALA President Barbara Stripling. Of course, the meat of the page is advocacy itself. Click Contact Congress to join in the campaigns that are advancing library science on the national level. Visit this site.

What started as a casual mention in an interview and a tweet from a freelancer writer back in December, 2013, has turned into a program that Amtrak is truly honored to be a part of. From the tens of thousands of responses on Twitter showing interest in the program, to the more than 16,000 applications we received. We couldn't be more excited to announce the 24 writers who will participate in this year's Amtrak Residency program. To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link.
