Photographic Records of Britain

The Frith archive was founded in 1860 and contains over 365,000 photographs of some 7,000 towns and villages throughout Britain. Taken between 1860 and 1970 these form a topographical record of Britain without equal and is recognised as the only photographic collection of national importance remaining in private hands. Whilst some of the photographs are undoubtedly artistically outstanding, the real value of the archive lies in its personal relevance for anyone with connections to the British Isles. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

India passed into law Monday an ambitious program to provide nearly free food to some 800 million Indians. Supporters hailed it as a long-overdue fix for the nation’s rampant poverty, while critics slammed it as a shameless and electoral ploy the country can’t afford that will encourage more waste and corruption.  To read the full report, go tour NEWS DESK link. UK and South African Cabinet Ministers have promised to try to revive the flailing target of doubling trade between the two countries by 2015, despite the global economic crisis having put a brake on these efforts. 7. Business: Update on the BRICS Union (Must Read for our Investors)
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The awesome emergence of the BRICS union, comprising nations representing five major engines of global economic growth and backed by half the planet’s population, is already producing nearly 50 percent of world GDP. The continued expansion of this group — Brazil, Russia, India, China and now South Africa — could eventually relegate into second place the once indefatigable “West” both in terms of production and consumerism.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

8. Education: How Being Bi-Lingual is a Great Benefit
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Never mind how well spoken you might be now; you will never again be as adept with languages as the day you were born. Indeed, the youngest person in any room is almost always the best linguist there too. There are 6,800 languages in the world, and since you can’t know where you’ll be born, you have to pop from the womb to be able to speak any one of them. That talent fades fast — as early as nine months after birth, some of our language synapses start getting pruned away. But well into your grammar-school years, your ability to learn a second — or third or fourth — language is still remarkable. To read the full article, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Education: How Does the Nervous System Work?
= = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

How does the nervous system work? It is a question that has engaged the minds of scientists, doctors, and others for centuries. The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has created this tour of the nervous system for teachers and students. First-time visitors can start with the Explore a Nerve Cell area, which goes over the membrane, nucleus, axon, dendrites, and the synapse in exquisite detail with interactive graphics. Moving on, The Basics area provides summaries of the operation of the nervous system and a rather illustrative area named Ouch! The site is rounded out by the Nervous Systems Explorations section, which has some nice simulations covering Brainstorms and Simple Reflexes. Visit this site.

10. Education: More of the History of World War 1
= = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A new Yorkshire Film Archive project aims to discover the stories behind century-old footage of soldiers as they went off to war. These films were made a century ago and this youthful nonchalance was soon wiped away as the horrors of the First World War unfolded. Some never returned home alive, while others were swallowed by the soil at places like Ypres, Verdun and the Somme, names that have since become synonymous with bloodshed and slaughter. To read the full report and view the film clips, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Yorkshire Post)

Editor’s Note:  We receive so many requests for old film cuttings of Yorkshire and England; we recommend that our readers visit this excellent site called “Yorkshire Film Archive” and you have a great selection of film clips showing the history of England in the past 100 years. Click here.

At just 20 years of age, this illegal immigrant in the USA sits at the helm of a thriving graphic design business, launching branding and media campaigns for national organizations. Some of her projects are so large she has to hire staff. Still, she has to hop on buses to meet clients throughout Phoenix because Arizona won't give her a driver's license. Concorde aircraft flew for the last time ten years ago. This supremely elegant airliner has yet to be replaced and, in an age of ubiquitous flying buses, cheap flights and long-term recession, perhaps it never will be. Glamorous and exclusive, a technological marvel and a thing of daunting beauty, Concorde belonged to an era that has vanished in a cloud of burned kerosene.
