1. Business: Trade Between Africa & USA
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

It is time for a new model of partnership between Africa and America, United States President Barack Obama said on Wednesday. “A partnership of equals that focuses on African capacity to solve problems, and on Africa's capacity to grow... That's why we're here,” he said in his opening remarks at a discussion between leaders at the US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

2. Business: Employment & Working From Home
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The working office is evolving, and home offices are becoming more prevalent. Working at home has many perks; saving costs on fuel, convenience, and fewer distractions than a bustling corporate office. However, often executives working from home or someone starting up their own business will neglect to invest in a working office that can assist in improving productivity.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 3. Business: Future Trends in South African Business
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said the government will seek to provide more clarity to businesses about its policies in order to bolster confidence and spur investment. “We recognize that a major reason for the low level of investment is weak business confidence,” Ramaphosa told delegates at a central bank leadership conference in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg. “This is driven, at least in part, by perceptions of policy uncertainty.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 4. Business: Investing in Kenya
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Kenya is ideal for investment, Uhuru tells U.S. entrepreneurs. The ambitious expansion and modernisation of the country's transport, energy and ICT infrastructure is aimed at reducing the cost of doing business, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

5. Business: The Trend of Politics in South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Politics in South Africa is no longer a vocation, a commitment to serving the people, as the salaries of politicians soar and they live glamorous lifestyles, a review of 20 years of democracy has found. The seventh volume of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) State of the Nation report, coinciding with 20 years since the advent of democracy in South Africa, acknowledges the government’s immense gains — its "astonishing record" of having built 2.7-million houses since 1994 — but also its failures in relation to its own promises. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note:  The staff of the Delamere Group usually do not approve articles of a political nature, but in view of the present trend of the politics in South Africa, this information will be of value to our many clients who have investments in that country. Also read the enlightening comments from various readers at the bottom of this NEWS DESK article.

6. Business: Much Needed Power Project for Ghana
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

InfraCo Africa is developing a 340MW, gas and oil fired, combined cycle power plant in the municipality of Kpone within the Tema industrial zone. The project will provide urgently needed low cost, reliable and efficient thermal power to the deregulated Ghanaian power market and will become one of the main off-takers of the West African Gas Pipeline. This digital gallery from the New York Public Library (NYPL) was prepared for an exhibition of the same name that was presented at NYPL in 2005. It consists primarily of page spreads from printed materials dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Written for and by women, these texts and images cover topics ranging from Adultery to Violence against women, with Girls, Grief, Kissing, and all sorts of other subjects in between. Typical titles include, “The young woman's guide to virtue, economy, and happiness”, and, “Elements of morality”, an advice book for children and parents with 50 copperplate illustrations, translated by Mary Wollstonecraft, who was later recognized as an influential early feminist. 8. Education: Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Many experts believe distance learning will constitute a substantial slice of the higher education pie in the near future. Still, comparatively little research has been published on the topic. The International Review of Research in Open and Distance learning, a freely accessible e-journal based in Alberta, Canada, seeks to disseminate original research, theory, and best practice in open and distance learning worldwide. Special issues have covered such topics as “Open Education Resources: Opening Access to Knowledge” and “Towards a European Perspective on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS): The Past, the Present and the Future.”  Featuring dozens of accessible, empirical articles, this academic journal is a welcome resource for anyone interested in online learning. 11. Education & Music: Story Behind Dvořák’s Cello Concerto
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

One of the best-loved works in repertoire, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto has seldom been absent for long from the Proms in London, where it was first heard in 1906. In its latest appearance, it forms a natural calling-card for the Czech Philharmonic, who performs it with star soloist Alisa Weilerstein. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

Plus being a great fan of Elgar the British composer, also listen to his beautiful Cello Concerto 1st Movement, by Jacqueline du Pré, click here.  To also learn more about this brilliant musician and her battle with MS, the beautiful but now very sad to say, the late, Jacqueline du Pré, from Oxford in England, read more.

Gone are the days when we were free to explore the world without barriers like visas and passports. The application process for these travel identification documents is becoming more stringent with the government administering new laws daily, specifically the newly-gazetted South African immigration rules that have been called unconstitutional and considerable legal upheaval is expected. Washington, USA: I was drowning in email. Overwhelmed. Overloaded. Spending hours a day, it seemed, roiling in an unending onslaught of info mails and falling further and further behind. The world’s newest long-haul, wide body commercial jet, the Airbus A350-900, recently completed its route-proving mission in Helsinki. Finnair will be the first European carrier to get its hands on the new bird when it takes delivery of its first of 11 in 2015. Initially, Finnair plans to deploy the A350 on routes between Helsinki and Bangkok, Beijing, and Shanghai. (Qatar Airways will be the first airline to operate the A350 later this year.)  To read more, visit our NEWS DESK link.

One of our readers asked for information on the best facilities for golf in Cape Town.  We are of course prejudiced and therefore recommend the MET. The Metropolitan golf course has remained the jewel of central Cape Town since its creation in 1895. Recognised as one of the finest 9-hole courses on the continent, the MET (as it is known by its members and visitors) was commissioned by the City of Cape Town. Visit this site.

18. Travel: Tanzania Overtaking Kenya as the Africa Tourist Spot

Tanzania expects tourist numbers to double to two-million by 2017, the state tourist board said, challenging regional rival  Kenya where Islamist attacks have scared away visitors. Tanzania famed for its pristine beaches and safari parks beneath snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, has always played second-fiddle to Kenya, which has a more developed tourism industry and better air links to the key markets in Europe and the USA.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Photo of the Month
= = = = = = = = =

Owing to the fact that most of our staff members are avid readers, this series of photos was submitted for our web site visitors to peruse. This may be the digital age, but libraries are thriving around the world, as they have for centuries. Many spectacular landmarks, both public and private, continue to be built — or rebuilt. In May, Sarajevo’s National Library was reopened two decades after the 118-year-old building — and its 2 million books and manuscripts — were destroyed by shelling in the Bosnian war. The accompanying photo gallery showcases dozens of libraries.  Visit this site of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Financial Reforms and Development in China ~ by Siwei Cheng

China has initiated and implemented its economic reforms for over 30 years, however, the comprehensive economic reforms and opening up is still unfolding. The author was a state leader, who has personally engaged in China's economic policy-making process from 1999 to 2008, and is an economist, who has deeply studied and thought over China's financial reform in various aspects. This book summarizes the results of the author's research on China's financial reforms, adopting the fictitious economy theory, in the past 10 years. "Financial Reforms and Development in China" focuses on the developmental process and main features of the fictitious economy; the essence and the law of the fictitious capital (including credit capital, knowledge capital, social capital, etc.); and, the relationship between the fictitious economy and the real economy.
